The Market Centre, off Market Street

Rebuilding Manchester official merchandise, showing the former Market Centre off Market Street c.1975.

The market, which opened in 1972 and closed in 1989, once had 100 market stalls and shops and had separate entrances on Brown Street (near Tesco), Spring Gardens and Norfolk Street.

A covered route between Market Street and Cross Street also protected shoppers from the rain.

The Centre included a range of outlets, including Stolen From Ivor (apparently the first store in the north of England to stock Levi's jeans). In addition, other stores included Oasis, Justin’s, and a range of smaller bouquet stalls.

The mug has been produced by Mclaggan Smith Mugs and designed by Andy Brookes of BRKS Design Studio.
